Intricate Latte Art Designs to Try at Home

Posted by Meera Nair on

Once you have mastered the basic latte art designs, such as the rosetta, heart, and tulip, it’s time to take your home barista skills a notch higher with more patterns that speak of countless hours of practice.

Not only are these designs even more striking, but the gesture of creating them adds to your coffee routine, making the cup of joe feel more satisfying.

Spider Web

If there’s one latte art design that resembles the fall season, it’s this. Also sometimes referred to as Halloween latte art, it is created by using chocolate syrup for that perfect blend of flavours.

While this pattern does seem intricate, it can be quite simple to make. All you need to do is pour the steamed milk into the centre of the cup to make the white base on the shot of espresso.

Then create a few concentric circles with the syrup. You can also use espresso or any other dark-coloured syrup for this but make sure the consistency is thick enough that the circles stay firmly on the surface of the steamed milk and don’t actually sink into the cup.

With a latte art pen, create lines panning outward from the centre of the cup. By this stage, you’ll witness the spider web pattern take shape.

Peacock

Although this is a challenging one, you’ll find that your efforts are worth it when the peacock latte art takes form. It’s a beautiful pattern and requires great precision to create.

The highlight of this design is the feathers of the peacock. Depending on how much detail you want to include, there are several ways to go about it. In the sense that you can have the peacock facing sideways or front. You can also create a flared tail.

Hold the cup at an angle and pour the milk in a way to create 3-4 arcs, similar to how you would make the tulip design, with the last one being an oblong shape. Drag the outer layer inward at regular intervals to create the fanned feathers.

Use a bit of the espresso to draw the long neck and face of the peacock in the middle of the feathers.

With enough practice, you should be able to ace creating this design.

Feather

The feather is an elegant latte art pattern that requires you to use fluid movements to capture the details.

Once you’ve got the white base, draw a straight line in the centre of the cup. To the side of this line, create outward strokes by using quick back-and-forth hand movements.

The more you practice control, the more definition your feather will have, as you’d need to capture the curves of the feather properly.

If this is your first time attempting a feather latte art, take it easy and don’t hurry. Also, avoid too much milk being poured at once, as this can disturb the pattern.

Cat

Know someone who loves furry friends and coffee? Animal latte art will absolutely delight them. Some popular designs you could consider are bears, dogs, and cats.

For this post, we’ll pick cat latte art.

There’s not much to the technique of creating a cat latte art. Pour the steamed milk to form a circle for the face. With a skewer or latte art pen, draw two triangles on either side for the ears and then the eyes & whiskers.

One mistake to avoid making is using a lot of pressure while adding details. This may take you a bit to perfect but try to achieve a balanced design with the proportions being accurate.

Remember to keep these latte art tips in mind as you try out more latte art patterns. Also, have fun with this experience!

It’s not often that people can claim to enjoy their favourite beverages as a work of art too.
